reOccupy Bayou Bienvenue
9th Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana Fall 2009 _ URBANbuild Studio Historically, Bayou Bienvenue provided local hunting and fishing grounds. Old city maps extend streets into the bayou and properties once swampland continue to be privately owned. The bayou began to suffer from to the inundation of salt water that came with industrial growth. Hurricane Katrina finally destroyed the bayou ecosystem. Working with the Make It Right Organization and 6 students for 6 weeks, we proposed to rehabilitate the bayou and renew interest. An installation of ‘pink houses’ using the same materials as the original MIR installation will be used to raise money for replanting the bayou. As funds become available, pavilions are to be placed in the water. |
